The Rutini Vineyards
Rutini Wines owns vineyards in five different areas of Mendoza, including Maipú, Rivadavia, La Consulta, Altamira and Tupungato, with a total of 255 hectares under vine. This diverse source of vineyard allows cultivation of each individual grape variety in the area that offers the best suited growing conditions.
At an elevation of 3000 to 5000 feet the Tupungato Valley offers many different microclimates and is today recognised as Mendoza's premier wine growing region. For decades, Rutini Wines have been harbingers of quality in Argentina producing world-class wines that can compete at the highest level. In 1994, Nicolas Catena, the pioneering owner of Bodegas Esmeralda, went into partnership with Felipe Rutini's grandson. In the last decade the winery has undergone substantial modernisation and the vineyards have benefited from Catena's outstanding vineyard team. Owner of a "state of the art" facility, the winery was completely renewed during the 90's in its technology, but keeping the architecture from the 19th century.
Rutini harvest
The Rutini family winemaking heritage began in the early 19th century in Le Marche, Italy, where Francisco Rutini started making wines for the citizens of his native town, Ascoli Piceno. His son Felipe Rutini emigrated to the Americas to extend the winemaking tradition, and it was in Coquimbito, Maipú in the province of Mendoza, Argentina that he planted the first vines. Towards the end of 1885 he began the construction of a winery, which he named La Rural, with the motto "Labor et Perseverantia". His first and primary concern was always quality. Don Felipe continued working with his plantations in Maipú and then expanded his operations to other areas, enlarging the winery and importing large vats and Nancy oak casks. Don Felipe passed away in 1919, leaving his descendants in charge of the company, who took up the development of white and red fine varietals such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Later on, the Chenin grape from the Loire Valley was incorporated.
